Stories from Nolde – from film set to silence

Over the past few weeks, Noldes Hygge Hjem served as the backdrop for the new Danish feature film Høsten. What a special experience that was. Our quiet yard in southern Denmark temporarily transformed into a lively film set, with dozens of people, cameras, lighting rigs, and constant activity.

I felt honored that this particular authentic Danish farmhouse had been chosen as a film location. At the same time, I also discovered something that I perhaps already knew deep down.

Crowds do not make my heart happy.

It becomes happy from silence.

From flowers gently swaying in the wind.

From a cup of tea in the courtyard.

From the curious clucking of the chickens, calmly pottering around me while I weed.

From the feeling that nothing is required and everything is allowed.

Where normally only the rustling of the trees, birdsong, and now and then a tractor in the distance can be heard, a completely different atmosphere took over for days on end. And as special as I found it to experience up close, I noticed that I missed the quiet. Even at night I slept more restlessly.

My hands wanted only one thing.

To bring everything back to how it was.

The flowers back in their place.

The little corners styled with love again.

Bringing back the atmosphere so many guests describe as hygge. That warm, relaxed feeling that lets people truly slow down during their stay and enjoy slow travel in South Denmark.

Once the shoot was over and our chickens could return to their own pen, I started tidying up the old barn. The house was still a film set, but here I could at least make a start.

Was it really necessary to clean out the barn so thoroughly? Probably not. But it gave me exactly the calm I'd been longing for.

Maybe a curious guest will take a peek into the old barn sometime. That's fine too. It's there, especially, that you catch a glimpse of this old farmhouse's history. I only stop by myself every now and then.

Still, I decided to give the old workshop a proper going-over.

A space where, perhaps a hundred years ago, a farmer once sharpened his scythe before heading out to mow the grain.

Now it had mostly become a storage space.

Among old boxes, tools, and a thick layer of dust, I suddenly spotted a worn-out suitcase.

Curious, I opened it.

What could still be inside?

And then I saw him.

An old grey rotary telephone.

As if he'd waited patiently all these years to be found again.

I carefully cleaned him up.

And at that moment, I already knew.

"You may stay."

After a thorough clean, he got a new spot.

No longer hidden away in a dark barn, but somewhere he gets to tell stories again.

Today he stands on the old desk in one of the atmospheric rooms at Noldes Hygge Hjem.

Maybe you'll notice him right away.

Maybe not.

But it's little finds like this that give this old farmhouse its soul.

Not everything has to be new to be valuable.

Some things carry a history you can't buy. They're a reminder of the people who lived here, worked here, and left their own stories behind.

Maybe that's exactly what you feel the moment you step into the courtyard of Noldes Hygge Hjem.

Not just a holiday home.

But a place where history, nature and quiet still have all the room they need.

Maybe that, in the end, is the biggest lesson the filming taught me.

Not that busyness is wrong.

But that, time and again, I choose the silence.

The phone will never ring again.

But every day, he tells a small piece of the story of this old farmhouse.
